Exercise

Exercise burns energy, and you can easily estimate the amount.

Type of Exercise 130 lbs 155 lbs 180 lbs 205 lbs
Basketball, shooting baskets 266 317 368 419
Bowling 177 211 245 279
Cycling, 12-13.9mph, moderate 472 563 654 745
Running, 6 mph (10 min mile) 590 704 817 931

Figure 1: Calories per Hour for selected exercises.
(data selected from nutristrategy.com)

Example 1: How many Calories would a 155 lb person burn while bowling for 90 minutes?

Solution 1: 90\,\cancel{min} \times \cfrac{1\, hr}{60\,\cancel{min}} = \SI{1.5}{hr}

1.5\,\cancel{hr}\times\cfrac{211\, Cal}{1\,\cancel{hr}} = \SI{316.5}{Cal}

Example 2: How long does it take a 180 lb person to burn 400 Calories while running at a pace of 6 miles per hour?

Solution 2: 400\, \cancel{Cal} \times \cfrac{\SI{1}{hr}}{817\,\cancel{Cal}} = \SI{0.49}{hr} \approx \SI{30}{min}

Here we had to flip the fraction from the chart to make Cal go on the bottom and cancel out. Therefore, we divide by 817 in our solution.

Tips:
•The units in the chart are \cfrac{Cal}{hr}.
•Use dimensional analysis – cancel out units
•Start with the amount in the problem (either Calories or hours) and use the chart number as your conversion factor (fraction you multiply by)
•Convert to the right units before you start
