Petroleum Project

You have two options:

A) Petroleum Products

1. Choose a product made from petroleum: here’s how to find some.

2. Find out what petroleum chemicals are in the product.
•Try to find the chemical name, formula, and structure

3. Decide what the main chemical is in this product .What are the important properties of this chemical that make it useful in your product? Are there any important disadvantages to the chemical?

4. How is this chemical ingredient produced?

5. How is the actual product produced?

6. What fun facts can you find about this chemical or this product? Feel free to list a few, but remember to spend most of your flier explaining the science.

B) Alternatives to Petroleum

1. Choose a type of alternative energy.
Alternative energy: producing energy without burning petroleum

2. How does this type of energy work? Where does the energy come from?

3. What are the advantages of this type of energy production?

4. What are the disadvantages of this type of energy production?

5. Where is this type of energy production used?

One more option: if desired, you can instead research a product that is an alternative to a petroleum product. For example, there are ways to make plastic out of renewable plant-based materials.

General Information

•This is an individual project.
•Everyone in the class has to pick a different topic.
•Present your information in a one page flier (8.5″ x 11″).
•No need to make it a tri-fold, but you can if you want. Only put info on one side of the page, though.
•On the back of the flier, or on a separate page, list your sources.
•Pictures are good!
•Cite sources in a sensible way (no giant gibberish links)
