What is R?

“R” isn’t an element – there is no element with that symbol.

“R” represents any group of atoms that could be attached to an organic molecule.

For example, alcohol’s generic structure looks like this:

\chemfig{[,.6]R-C(-[2,.4])(-[6,.4])-[,.6]OH}

“R” could be as simple as one hydrogen atom:

\chemfig{[,.6]H-C(-[2,.4])(-[6,.4])-[,.6]OH}

Or “R” could be an entire carbon chain:

\definesubmol{a}{-C(-[2])(-[6])-[,.2]} \chemfig{[,.4]!a!a!a!a!a!a-[,.4]OH}

“R” is a variable or wildcard character. It could represent anything.
