Chemical Properties

Chemical Property: the ability to form a new substance in a chemical reaction. Chemical properties can only be observed by combining substances and seeing what new substance (if any) is formed.

Examples:
•gasoline can burn (react with oxygen) to produce carbon dioxide and water
•fluorine can react with uranium to form the dense UF6 gas
•lone nitrogen atoms will combine to form N2 molecules
•CO2 gas can combine with water molecules to form a weak acid
•metals react with acids, usually forming one or more gases and a salt
•at high temperatures, aluminum reacts with iron(III) oxide (rust) to form molten iron and a lot of heat
•solid sodium azide (NaN3) rapidly decomposes to form sodium metal and nitrogen gas
